The healing power of honey

The new year is often a time to set some health goals. Is honey a part of yours?

Long loved as a natural sweetener, this gift from the bees is also used around the world as a health booster. Honey is rich in antioxidants and antibacterial properties, and it deserves a spot in both your medicine cabinet and your pantry.

Propolis is also amazing. Bees produce it to fortify their hives from invaders and disease. Evidence of humans valuing propolis goes as far back as ancient Egypt. Today its uses in traditional medicine include as an antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and more.

While local honey is trusted for a range of what ails you, it’s most commonly used as a tasty remedy for coughs and sore throats. Planet Bee shared their favourite choices for both honey and propolis:

Sore Throats

  • Lemon Ginger Honey dissolved in warm water as a soothing beverage
  • Propolis Tincture in Honey & Glycerine taken by drops into the mouth to coat the throat

Nightime Coughs

  • Buckwheat Blossom Honey – studies show this extra-dark honey is loaded with antioxidants and vitamins

For An Added Boost

  • Hive Healer Honey – this 4-in-1 formula combines raw honey, propolis, royal jelly and bee pollen. It packs multiple benefits from the beehives into one easy-to-use product.

Planet Bee’s collection of health and wellness products also includes a Propolis Echinacea throat spray, an Immunity Essentials pack, bee pollen, ointments and salves, and much more.

When relying on honey for its good-for-you properties, it’s worth noting that all honey is not created equal. There are some important differences between natural honey and the mass-produced commercial kinds.

“Commercial honey is often a big blend of honeys mixed for a consisted flavor,” Olivia Hoffart from Planet Bee explained. “But we prefer to keep our honeys separate, so you can enjoy their individual flavor and benefits!”

If you’re using honey for health’s sake, it’s good to choose carefully.
