Vernon Fire Rescue Services quickly responded to — and doused — a fire in a downtown garbage dumpster Monday afternoon.

Fire crews were dispatched to an alley off 34th Street, behind Grillers Meats and Triumph Coffee, at approximately 3:35 p.m. June 17.

The smoke could be seen around the downtown area.

Vernon Matters arrived on the scene and found two local workers dumping water into the dumpster, which was not showing flames but was smoking heavily, before a fire engine arrived and a firefighter doused the blaze.

Traffic on 34th Street was partially blocked while crews doused the flames.

Fire crews had cleared the scene within 15 minutes of responding.

The local workers could not confirm the cause of the fire, and Vernon Matters has requested more information from the City of Vernon.
