Foundation says Ride Don’t Hide helps break down stigma of mental health

A local non-profit organization is making an investment into mental health services for young people in the North Okanagan.

The Emily Dahl Foundation (EDF) has announced a $500 donation to the team led by Sheila Stainton who is participating in the Ride Don’t Hide fundraiser on Sunday, June 9 at Polson Park in Vernon.

“We are touched to see how the community has come out to support mental health in our community,” the foundation stated in a news release.

“The family and friends of Emily Dahl join Jay Hack and Sheila Stainton [parents of 2016 suicide victim Liam Hack] in this worthwhile cause. We all want to share our story to create the discussion about youth suicide in our community and continue to help break down the stigma.”

The foundation was started as a way to keep Emily Dahl’s spirit of compassion, love, and generosity alive. The Coldstream resident passed away by suicide in January 2019 at the age of 18.

The EDF, which is under the umbrella of The Community Foundation North Okanagan (CFNO), encourages others to sponsor their favourite team for Ride Don’t Hide which raises money for mental health programs for youth.

Leanne Hammond of the CFNO said the event is a reminder to check in on each other, and to recognize the deep distress that results from mental health challenges.

“Reaching out for help requires great strength and should be applauded and encouraged. Suicide continues to be the second leading cause of death among 15 to 24-year-olds in B.C., after motor vehicle accidents,” Hammond said.
