Transforming Excess into Opportunity for Local Schools

At the end of any project, there’s usually some material leftover. For local building company, Farrow Built, surplus lumber is a chance to give back to the community.

“Some of it is brand new. You know, so instead of returning it, any stuff that’s clean and usable, we take to whatever local high school is closest,” said founder Duncan Farrow. “They always love that, because it’s more stuff for the kids in the shop classes to work with.”

Earlier this month, the Farrow crew dropped off a donation to the woodworking shop at Pleasant Valley High School.

For some students, wood classes are a way to earn high school credits toward graduation and gain some handy skills that’ll come in handy on future DIY projects.

But Duncan knows that for some, those skills could actually lead to a rewarding career.

“Hopefully it encourages kids in high school here to look at the trades as a viable option and have some fun with it.” He said he also has plans for a Farrow Built presentation for local high schools about the opportunity that working in the skilled trades presents.

Making the donations a way to give back is enough though, and for Farrow Built, it’s far better than returning the excess material or having it sit in their own shop. “We’re glad that we’re able to do that when a job is finished. You know, if we have a few pieces of extra material here and there, that it’s going to good use.”

It’s easy to see the enthusiasm the Farrow Built team has for their trade. They’re very active on social media with views on what current projects as well as free education content for anyone interested. You can find Farrow Built on your social platforms:
