School District 22 (Vernon) has chosen its new administrative leader.

The Board of Education has announced the appointment of Karla Mitchell as superintendent of schools, effective August 1, 2024.

Mitchell will take over the position from Dr. Christine Perkins, who will retire at the end of July.

“With an extensive career in education, Karla brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the district,” SD22 said in a news release.

The district says Mitchell’s journey in educational leadership began in Nova Scotia, where she served as a teacher, vice principal, and principal at Springhill High School. She then moved on to senior leadership positions with the Chignecto-Central Regional Centre for Education (CCRCE), also in Nova Scotia, serving 65 schools, and about 20,000 students.

Mitchell is currently the superintendent for District 91 (Nechako Lakes) in Vanderhoof.

“In her pursuit of lifelong learning, Karla earned two Master of Education degrees, specializing in educational administration and curriculum studies with a focus on culturally relevant pedagogy. Her dedication to fostering inclusive and effective learning environments aligns with School District 22’s vision for the future,” the news release stated.

Mitchell said she is honored to join School District 22 and is eager to collaborate with the staff, students, and partners.

“Together, we will build on the district’s successes and work towards a bright and inclusive future for each and every learner,” Mitchell said.

Board of Education Chair Mark Olsen is enthusiastic about the hiring.

“Karla Mitchell promises to be a leader whose passion for education and track record of transformative leadership will be invaluable to our district. We are confident that under her guidance, School District 22 will continue to thrive,” Olsen said.

Board of Education vice chair Kelli Sullivan is thrilled.

“Karla is the leader we need to achieve our vision of a community where all are respected, and each person is encouraged to develop to their full potential,” Sullivan said.

Olsen thanked retired superintendent and consultant, Dr. Jordan Tinney, for assisting the board throughout the recruitment process.

Christine Perkins has been SD22’s superintendent since August 2021, taking over from Joe Rogers.
