The amount of people who have used the Okanagan Rail Trail has grown beyond expectations over the past several years.

Based on data collected by the Regional District of North Okanagan’s (RDNO) trail counter at the Westkal Road entrance, an estimated 353,500 people walked or cycled along the multi-use path in 2023.

That figure reflects a user increase of 225 per cent when compared to 2019 when the estimated Rail Trail visitors totaled 109,000.

“The Okanagan Rail Trail sets a new standard for accessible outdoor recreation in the region,” Andy Affleck, RDNO Parks and Recreation Manager, stated in an email to Vernon Matters.

Its increasing popularity reflects the collaborative efforts of local government partners, First Nations, dedicated volunteers, like FORT [Friends of the Rail Trail], and the natural beauty of the Okanagan Valley. Together, we have created a truly world class experience for all to enjoy.”

The RDNO did note the figures are estimates, as people could pass by the counters multiple times per visit.

The Okanagan Rail Trail was created by converting a decommissioned railway track into a multi-use pathway between Coldstream and Kelowna, although part of it remains closed on First Nations land north of the Kelowna Airport.

The official opening of the trail was on Sept. 27, 2018.
