The latest price tag for hosting seven FIFA World Cup games in Vancouver in 2026 is as much as 581-million-dollars, more than double what was estimated two years ago.

Vancouver’s Mayor Ken Sim says taking on the event is a “no-brainer,” even with the hefty price tag, as it will benefit the province, particularly the tourism sector.

Tourism Minister Lana Popham says they will stick to the budget for the event, which is scheduled to run between June and July and include to games featuring Team Canada.

B.C. government documents say hosting is expected to generate enough revenue to result in a net cost of between 100-million- and 145-million-dollars and bring in one-billion-dollars worth of tourism revenue over the five years after the games.
