People hitting the road for the Easter long weekend are reminded to be safe behind the wheel.

The Insurance Corporation of B.C. (ICBC) said weather conditions can be unpredictable this time of year, adding the long weekend also coincides with Spring Break for many students which may result in additional traffic on the roads.

ICBC data shows that, on average, one person is killed and another 578 other are injured in 2,176 crashes throughout the province every Easter long weekend.

In the Interior, there are an average of 60 people injured in 313 crashes over the Easter break.

Travellers are encouraged to take steps to prevent incidents over the long weekend by planning their trips ahead of time, checking weather forecasts and road conditions at DriveBC; not driving when fatigued; making sure vehicles are ready for the road including by topping up fluids and making sure lights are functioning; avoiding distractions when behind the wheel; driving to conditions; watching out for other road users, especially motorcycles; and looking out for wildlife.
