Sleeping on the Job

B&E suspect caught napping in Vernon business

Mar 20, 2024 | 3:01 PM

An alleged criminal was arrested after being caught asleep in a Vernon business.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP said officers responded to a reported overnight break and enter that occurred at a business on Waddington Drive at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 19.

Staff had arrived at the business and found that someone had forced their way into the store and gone through the tools and other merchandise.

Police arrived on the scene and located the suspect asleep on a storage shelf inside the building.

The suspect, a 46-year-old man, was woken up and taken into custody without incident.

“The effort of breaking in and all the stress of the crime must have really tuckered him out,” Constable Chris Terleski, media relations officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, said.

“Emptying display cabinets and sorting and stockpiling all of his loot left him so exhausted he decided to steal a few minutes of shut-eye before continuing with his heist, but completely overslept.”

The suspect made an initial appearance in court Tuesday. He remains in custody and is due back in court Wednesday.
