Mix tricks – Getting the thinset right for your tile project
The success or failure of a tile installation project often rests on how the thinset was mixed. Although this can make it feel very intimidating to most DIYers, Dennis from Arden Tile assured us that mixing thinset isn’t as scary as it seems.
Thinset is a smooth concrete-based adhesive fortified with sticky acrylic polymers. It was developed to stick tiles of all kinds to various surfaces. Dennis provided some tips to get the mixture right.
- Mix only a half bag at a time
The mixing instructions are on the back of the bag; however, a full mixed bag of thinset is more than most DIYers can use before it starts to harden and become unusable.
“I always recommend mixing half bag amounts because it’s easy to convert water mixing ratios in half, and you won’t throw away as much,” said Dennis. - Consider your temperature conditions
“When it’s warmer out, mix the thinset a bit looser by using a bit more water. It will key into your substrate better, and you will get longer working time. Using cold water gives you longer working time as well, as it delays the cure.” - Know when not to add more water
“Once the thinset starts to firm up in the bucket, do not add more water. Adding more water after the initial mix will weaken the thinset, and accelerate the hardening process,” Dennis cautioned. “The best thing you can do is just re-stir it with your mixer or throw it out and mix some more.”
A successful tile project can transform a space. Bathrooms, kitchens, fireplaces, entryways… today’s wide variety of tile means the possibilities are almost endless. Done right, your finished project will last for years.
