$30K in grants for non-profits approved by Vernon council

Vernon city council has agreed to provide several organizations with discretionary grants.

At its regular meeting Monday, Nov. 27, council was presented with the October intake of Council Discretionary Grants.

The report recommended providing a total of $29,960 in funding to eight organizations:

  • 6th Vernon Scout Group: $2,000 to purchase equipment and supplies
  • Literary Society of the North Okanagan: $4,000 to support the increase of wages and materials for four new facilitators in an 18-week program
  • North Valley Gymnastics Society: $7,460 of the requested amount of $202,473.60 for the replacement of equipment
  • Special Olympics B.C. – Vernon Committee: $6,000 to expand training programs with additional space, practices, equipment and uniforms
  • Vernon and District Funtastic Sports Society: $1,500 to buy tables and chairs for their events
  • Vernon District Riding Club: $5,000 to install a better irrigation system for sand rings
  • Vernon Figure Skating: $1,000 to purchase on and off ice equipment
  • Vernon Pride Society: $3,000 to buy gender-affirming garments for youth and adults

As per the staff recommendation, council denied the applications for 11 other organizations requesting a total of $87,721.28 in council discretionary grants.

Among the requests that were denied was $23,000 for the AURA Chamber Choir Society; $20,000 to the Fresh Outlook Foundation; $9,121.28 for the Kindale Development Association; $7,500 for the Vernon Lawn Bowling Club; and $7,500 to the Canadian Home Builders Association.

The motion passed unanimously without discussion.

Councillor Kelly Fehr was not present for the meeting, and Councillor Akbal Mund recused himself from the vote due to his involvement with Funtastic.
