A suspect in a break and enter in Kelowna is facing a number of charges after being taken down by a police service dog.

Kelowna RCMP responded to a break and enter in progress at a property on Glenmore Road North at approximately 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15.

The residence had been mostly destroyed during the wildfires in the summer but was being monitored by CCTV surveillance, which captured an unknown vehicle entering the property via the front gate.

Officers arrived on the scene and observed an individual with a flashlight fleeing on foot, and determined that the outdoor storage units had been broken into.

Frontline officers and a police dog service (PDS) unit tracked the suspect while other investigators remained at the scene to process the vehicle, during which they uncovered a replica firearm, additional weapons and drugs.

The initial search for the suspect was unsuccessful, but the PDS member continued to track the suspect, who was found nearly three hours later.

The individual was taken into custody and police learned they were wanted on outstanding warrants from Mission, Abbotsford and Ridge Meadows for property related and other offences.

The suspect remains in custody while the break and enter investigation continues.
