5,000 New Spaces Across B.C.

Shelter spaces opening in Okanagan, B.C. ahead of winter

People experiencing, or at risk of homelessness, will have more shelter options to get out of the cold.

The province announced Friday operating agreements to open more shelter spaces in communities identified as in need would be finalized “in the coming weeks.”

The B.C. government said, through B.C. Housing, funding would be provided to open 5,000 shelter spaces in 50 communities throughout the province. Those include permanent shelter spaces open 24/7/365, temporary shelter spaces operating 24 hours a day in the winter months, and extreme weather-response shelters offered as needed from Oct. 15 to April 15.

No investments were announced for Vernon or the North Okanagan, but the province plans to open more beds in both Kelowna and Kamloops.

In Kelowna there will be 210 permanent year-round beds and 60 temporary spaces funded through the agreements.

In Kamloops there will be 167 new permanent spaces, 24 temporary spaces and 30 extreme weather response spaces opened.

These, as well as beds in Prince George (151 total spaces), Surrey (429) Vancouver (603) and Victoria (335), are expected to open November 1, 2023.

The province did not provide details on which other communities would benefit from the remaining 3,000 shelter spaces promised.

B.C. Housing has launched a new tool people can use to find shelters in their communities.

Among the beds available in Vernon are the 62 year-round beds offered to all people through Turning Points Collaborative Society, as well as 26 permanent 19+ beds.
