It is sweltering hot and your air conditioning unit has decided it needs a break.

We asked Kevin Ukkonen for some advice on the next steps.

There are a few things you can do, make sure all your registers are open, you should never have more than 10 percent of your registers closed. Make sure your furnace air filter is clean, make sure your blinds are closed, your windows are closed. Ukkonen said.

If you notice icing around the furnace or air conditioner what should you do?

“Leave the unit off for a day, turn it back on, this might give you some relief while you are waiting for a technician to come out,” Ukkonen stated. “A little maintenance goes a long way with most home appliances, including the air conditioning system. Since the AC unit is one of the biggest appliance investments in most homes, it makes sense to have an annual checkup. Bee’s Knee’s air conditioning services ensure that all is running smoothly, and you won’t have unexpected problems during the hot summer months.”

The AC tune-up includes an inspection of the:

  • Refrigerant levels
  • Pressure
  • Evaporator coil
  • Condenser
  • Outdoor disconnect
  • Condenser fan blades and motor
  • Condensate drain
  • Wiring, contacts, capacitors, and relays

“During the maintenance visit, a technician will clean the condenser and check and adjust the thermostat. When the inspection and tune-up is complete, you will be given a recommendation for any further repair or maintenance needs,” Ukkonen said.

Your AC unit may need repair if you notice:

  • Poor or no air circulation
  • It does not sufficiently cool your home
  • Trouble starting the air conditioner
  • The AC shuts off before reaching the desired temperature
  • Unusual noises
  • Strange smells
  • Blowing hot air
