Archeological findings delay Polson Park naturalization plan

The revitalization of Vernon Creek in Polson Park has been delayed.

A report to Vernon city council stated archeologists found lithic debitage (stone tools) on both banks of Vernon Creek.

The tools were discovered as part of an archeological impact assessment in late-May and early-June, which is preliminary work required ahead of any large projects.

A report to city council stated only two items had been found, but it was believed more artifacts could be found in the area.

The city has now cancelled the requests for proposals for the work in the park, as a site alteration permit must be issued by the archaeology branch before any work can resume.

The report stated getting that permit could take anywhere between five to 12 months, and recommended the project be postponed until 2024.

The new timeline for the first phase of the project is July 2024 to October 2024. Phase two would likely go in 2025.

Vernon council accepted the recommendation from city staff at the regular meeting Monday, June 12.
