Interior Health has declared a respiratory illness outbreak at Noric House in Vernon.

The outbreak began Saturday, April 8, and affects the Landing Unit of the long-term care facility.

Interior Health has confirmed with Vernon Matters that five people have been infected with human metapneumovirus, a common seasonal virus that causes an upper respiratory illness similar to a cold.

No hospitalizations or deaths have been linked to the outbreak.

As per the health authority’s procedures, signs have been posted outside the affected unit; activities and outings may be cancelled; staff will be wearing gowns, gloves and masks; and residents are encouraged to stay in their room as much as possible and reschedule non-emergency medical appointments.

Residents who are not ill are still permitted to attend other facilities for medically necessary activities.
