A Vernon-based company continues to find success in the Canadian market, and beyond, with its line of golf carts, and low-speed street legal commuter and work carts, with major expansion plans in the works.

SC Carts currently operates on a three-acre commercial location on Greenhow Road above Swan Lake. The combined building square footage is just under 13,000 square feet.

“We are currently just finishing the paperwork for our new production facility, which will add an additional 16,000 square feet to this location. We currently have a team of 22 people at this location which will increase substantially once the new facility is completed,” SC Carts CEO Jeffery Holomis told Vernon Matters.

SC Carts is also getting ready to launch its first SC Carts store and design studio in Kelowna with a grand opening on April 1, 2023, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.at #102-854 McCurdy Road, Kelowna.

“This will be our launch store, and we will be adding more stores across Canada over the next couple years with our next location being on Vancouver Island,” Holomis said.

SC Carts is primarily focused on the huge untapped Canadian market, but are shipping to the USA having sold vehicles to California, Idaho, Washington, North Carolina, and others. The company has also shipped vehicles to the Bahamas and Turkey with many inquiries coming in from all over the world.

The business was incorporated in 2010 after Holomis was bought out of his two companies that he owned at the time.

At first, SC Carts focused on purchasing lease return carts that were used on golf courses.

“We would buy a few at a time and then tear them down and rebuild them by customizing them and building them to suit our customers requests,” he explained.

In 2015, Holomis decided that he wanted to return to what he knew best, which was manufacturing. So, he set out to find the right manufacturing partners, and by working together with engineers and suppliers, developed the line of NXT electric vehicles.

The first was released in 2017 and since then the company has added several models to the NXT lineup and added a completely new line of vehicle, the SC City. The street legal low speed EV has a starting price tag of just over $25,000.

While SC produces a standard line of carts, they can get extremely custom with vehicles as it has a complete CNC equipped fabrication department, custom in-house paint and upholstery department, along with a talented team to make it all come together.

“With that being said, you won’t see SC Carts producing the vehicles that look like small versions of full-size carts, I never liked the proportions of them. However, what we do make is themed vehicles – so if you own a high-end car, or want it modeled after something you love, then we will take elements from that thing and incorporate it into the vehicle,” Holomis stated.

While SC carts is focused on the golf cart side of the business, the commuter and work EV sales are increasing, with a range of vehicles and customer options available.

SC Carts was the first and only Canadian low speed electric vehicle manufacturer in the market segment and is the first Transport Canada approved Canadian manufacturer given approval to drive this type of vehicles on the public roadways.

“This process took us five years to achieve – as opposed to simply having one of our vehicles approved for use on the roads, we have been able to be approved as a low-speed vehicle manufacturer, meaning that anything we manufacturer can be made to be used on the roads, of course providing that we meet the requirement laid out by Transport Canada,” Holomis added.
