Season over

New Zamboni bay added to Vernon’s outdoor rink

Vernon’s Centennial Outdoor Rink has closed for the season, but a new addition to the facility will make ice cleaning more efficient next winter.

The city recently completed a new Zamboni bay adjacent to the ice sheet, much closer than before.

“Previously, the Zamboni for the Centennial Outdoor Rink was housed in the Priest Valley Arena Zamboni bay,” a city news release stated. “When it was needed to clear and flood the ice outside, it would have to travel through the curling rink parking lot and the lane way between the curling rink and the recreation centre.”

City staff say with the new bay, the Zamboni can drive right onto the ice, making it safer around the rink for pedestrians, skaters and staff, and reducing the time it takes to clear the ice.

“The project came in just under budget,” the city release said.

Recreation Services is thanking everyone who came out for drop-in activities such as public skating and shinny hockey at the Rec Centre rink this season.
