Regional partners offer funding for Kal Beach Pier project

A project to upgrade a popular attraction in Coldstream is getting regional support.

Three of the electoral areas of the Regional District of North Okanagan have approved $70,000 for Coldstream’s rebuild of the Rotary Pier at Kal Beach on Kalamalka Lake.

The money will come from the Community Works Fund with Electoral Areas B (Swan Lake/Commonage) and D (Rural Lumby) each providing $10,000 and Electoral Area C (BX/Silver Star) contributing $50,000.

That motion was passed at the RDNO meeting Feb. 15.

The pier has multiple failing, rotted piles and is showing signs of deterioration.

The estimated cost to replace the piles, supports and decking from the beach to the ‘T” is $500,000.

Coldstream staff are recommending the wooden piles be replaced with steel ones, which cost $63,000 more but last about three times longer.

Coldstream could use gas tax funds for the project.

Mayor Ruth Hoyte told Vernon Matters back in December, council would make a decision on the timing of the project once it had more information on the costs and design, but the plan at that point, was to proceed in 2023.
