Contraband cigarettes seized in Vernon traffic stop

A traffic stop in Vernon led to the seizure of more than a million illegal cigarettes.

Police pulled over a vehicle towing a trailer in the 4800 block of 27th Street on Jan. 8.

Mounties say the 45-year-old Lumby man operating the vehicle was found to be prohibited from driving and was arrested.

“Following the arrest, and as a result of further investigation, police discovered evidence that led to the seizure of nearly 1.5 million cigarettes, all believed to be contraband,” RCMP Const. Chris Terleski, media relations officer, said.

The province of B.C. describes contraband tobacco as products that are not properly stamped or marked or legal tobacco products that are purchased or sold illegally.

RCMP say the suspect was released from police custody and will appear in court at a future date.

Officers are continuing to investigate the incident.
