Vernon expanding emergency program with digital notifications

Sep 13, 2022 | 10:26 AM

A digital notification system is being adopted by the City of Vernon’s Emergency Program.

The city is now using the Alertable system to provide time sensitive emergency-related information to residents, businesses and visitors.

The system sends direct notifications to subscribers through a smartphone app, by phone, text message, or email. The notifications will be for large scale emergencies such as wildfires, floods, or other hazards within the municipal boundary.

“In order to receive these notifications from the City of Vernon, you must subscribe to Alertable and choose your preferred method of communication. There is no cost to the public to receive these notifications and signing up is easy,” Emergency Program Coordinator Sue Saunders said.

“The city encourages all residents to subscribe today.”

Only critical notifications, such as evacuation orders, will be delivered via phone call or text message. All types of notifications will be delivered via the Alertable app, email, website, home speaker systems and social media.

The public is advised to download the Alertable app through the Apple and Google app stores as it also allows users to access DriveBC and Environment Canada weather alerts.

People who subscribe to Alertable should follow ‘Vernon, B.C.’ to receive notifications for local emergencies.
