UPDATE: Aug. 17, 2022

Part of the new Civic Memorial Park in Vernon opened on Tuesday.

Visitors can use the playground and picnic tables.

City staff say the grassy, meadow areas will remain fenced-off until the grass is fully established.

The balloon play structure is also fenced until the city gets a solution for the vandalized balloon covering.

The city isn’t certain when the full park will open.

“We are not able to provide a firm date for the park to be opening, and it’s likely an official opening will need to be in the spring,” Christy Poirier, communications and grants manager, told Vernon Matters.

The park is located on 3033 37th Avenue, where the former Civic Arena was.

Part of new Vernon park expected to open this month

Local residents could get to check out Vernon’s newest park later this month.

The city says construction on Civic Memorial Park on 37th Avenue is nearing completion, but there are some outstanding items which continue to delay its opening.

“These are anticipated to be resolved, and a portion of the park is expected to open before the end of August with the grassy areas remaining fenced until the grass is fully established,” a report to city council from staff stated.

City staff say the eye-catching balloon in the playground, which was vandalized earlier this summer, will have to be fenced-off for safety reasons until it’s repaired.

The park is on the former site of the Vernon Civic Arena which was torn down in 2018.
