Agency investigates injury to man who had been in police custody

Nov 26, 2021 | 12:35 PM

B.C.’s police watchdog agency is investigating an incident in Enderby where a man who had been held in police cells was injured.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C. says the RCMP reports that on Tuesday, Nov. 23 at around 11:20 p.m., officers responded to a reported disturbance in the 100 block of Larsen Avenue in Enderby and arrested one man. The man was released the following day at 7:30 a.m.

About one hour later, another disturbance was reported near a residence on Garrett Road involving the same man who had recently been released. Officers attended and placed him under arrest before transporting him to Enderby RCMP detachment cells.

Emergency Health Services attended the detachment and transported the man to hospital, where he was found to have sustained a serious but not life-threatening injury.

The IIO has started a probe to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions played in the injury.

The independent civilian oversight agency is asking anyone with relevant information of the incident to contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
