Active shooting suspect in Vanderhoof arrested

It was chaos in the northern B.C. community of Vanderhoof today as an active shooter was on the loose.

RCMP responded to reports of someone with a long gun targeting the RCMP detachment on Columbia Street and then continuing to drive around the area. The public was asked to stay inside or to shelter in place.

Just after 1 p.m., RCMP apprehended the suspect.

“A brief pursuit was initiated, during which a police vehicle was rammed. The suspect was then arrested without incident,” said Cpl. Madonna Saunderson, with RCMP media relations in Prince George.

An emergency alert that was issued in Vanderhoof was rescinded, and businesses and schools were allowed to return to normal operations.

The RCMP is thanking the public for their cooperation during the dynamic event.

“At this time, there is nothing to indicate any further ongoing threats to the public,” said Saunderson. “Fortunately there were no reported injuries to anyone during this event.”

RCMP continue to investigate the incident.

Vanderhoof is a district municipality, 100 km’s west of Prince George, with a population of about 4,500.
