Long-term RV parking no longer permitted on Vernon streets

A bylaw has been amended to restrict recreational vehicles from being set up on Vernon city streets.

At their Nov. 22 regular meeting, Vernon council voted in favour of prohibiting an RV from being stabilized or extended.

The bylaw specifically restricts stabilizing, securing or otherwise preventing the RV from moving through the “use of jacks, blocks, stabilizers, bricks or other material, unless in a residential zone for a period no longer than 24 consecutive hours.”

The bylaw also bans the extension of an RV through the use of ‘push outs,’ ‘slide outs,’ and awnings.

The bylaw does provide exemptions for situations where a police officer, bylaw officer or the fire chief direct the vehicle to stay, or if permitted by a traffic control device.

RV’s in contravention to these regulations could face fines ranging from $90 to $200.

It was noted by city administration during the meeting that bylaw will begin with an education-first approach in enacting the new bylaw, but will move to issuing fines with what administration called a ‘progressive enforcement’ model if people continue to set up their RV’s for long term stays.

The motion to amend the bylaw was carried with unanimous support from council.
