Aug 18, 2021 | 4:00 PM

It’s been almost a week since a swimming advisory was issued for Kal Beach on Kalamalka Lake.

Signs were posted at the popular site last Thursday, advising of bacteria counts exceeding Health Canada guidelines.

The District of Coldstream says it’s waiting for the the latest water testing results from Interior Health.

“Hopefully we will have some information soon, said Trevor Seibel, Chief Administrative Officer for the District of Coldstream.

At last check, the cause of the high levels were not known but were being investigated.

People can still go to Kal Beach, but swimming is not recommended.

The District of Coldstream and Interior Health say bacterial counts in Kalamalka Lake at that popular site exceed Health Canada guidelines.

Signs will be posted at the beach to warn users of the associated risks.

“The cause at this time is unknown,” said Trevor Seibel, chief administrative officer for Coldstream. “We are working with Interior Health. There were two consecutive water samples that showed elevated bacteria and thus the reason for the notice.”

Interior Health said on its website, many local governments monitor their beaches for physical hazards and sources of contamination. Beach water samples are collected during the bathing season to monitor the quality of the water and compare the results with the “Guidelines for Recreational Quality.”
