Street closures for market

Enderby Farmers Market moves downtown for 2021

May 5, 2021 | 1:20 PM

The Enderby Farmers Market has received council approval to hold the market on the street in the downtown starting this Friday, May 7.

City council has approved the closure of Cliff Avenue (from Highway 97A to Vernon Street) and Belvedere Street (Cliff Ave. to Speers Lane) every Friday through Oct. 22, 2021, to allow for a pedestrian market.

The closure will run from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. to allow for set up and tear down, with the market running from 8 a.m. until noon.

The market is relocating from the Splatsin Community Centre parking lot.

Speers and MacPherson Lanes will remain open for vehicle and emergency access, during market hours.

Businesses within one block of the market were petitioned for opinions on the closure, with 31 in favour, two opposed and six didn’t respond. One business in favour did however express concern, that certain food vendors would be in direct competition with their business.

The market will be fully responsible for setting up and taking down traffic control devices, maintaining porta-potties, emptying city garbage cans and cleaning up litter in the closed area each week.

While the change has been approved just for 2021, if all goes well, it could become a permanent fixture.

Other Okanagan communities have had great success with street markets, including Penticton, where Main Street is closed for several blocks, every Saturday through the end of October.
