Our region has done well in the latest round of provincial destination and tourism infrastructure funding for the Thompson Okanagan tourism region.

A total of 14 projects totalling $2.3 million have been approved.

The funding announcement includes money for the following area initiatives:

  • Development of a 3.5 km pilot section of the Shuswap North Okanagan Rail Trail that will connect Enderby, Splatsin te Secwépemc, and the Regional District of North Okanagan Area F. $250,000.
  • Construct approximately one km of the Grey Canal Trail, a 50-km trail that circumnavigates Vernon, to connect Turtle Mountain to Davidson Orchards, completing an eight-km continuous trail section in Vernon. $110,000.
  • Building full length signature downhill and cross country mountain bike trails to expand regional mountain bike trail experiences and expand major trail events. (Silver Star and others) $600,000.
  • Caravan Farm Theatre will build three recorded storytelling tracks that accompany a specific 20 – 30 minute walk through the 80 acre site to increase access to the farm theatre throughout the year. $25,000.

“We know recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic for businesses and people in the tourism sector are critically important. This fund creates new tourism infrastructure, which will help the sector recover, create local jobs and spur economic development,” said Melanie Mark, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. “Building on the calls to action from the sector, this fund invests in initiatives that link communities together and encourages visitors to spend time at several destinations within a region.”

The Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) in partnership with community destination management organizations, local and regional governments, First Nations, non-profits and other partners have worked together to identify initiatives that will enhance the region’s tourism amenities and experiences.

TOTA will receive $100,000 toward administration costs and five B.C. regional destination marketing organizations including TOTA will contribute $45,000 toward a digital infrastructure project creating a central dashboard that provides continuous and timely insights into tourism-related trends to support investment attraction and destination management. The total project cost is $225,000.

The province’s six tourism regions have received a total of $13.6 million to create employment opportunities, attract new businesses and increase economic diversification within communities.

“Attracting more visitors to the Thompson-Okanagan is a boost for our local operators, their families and our communities at large. We are already fortunate enough to live in a world-class tourist destination that plays a crucial role in our economy, and I’m happy to see these investments helping make sure our communities recover quickly by creating even more opportunities for people to explore our beautiful part of the world.” Harwinder Sandhu, MLA for Vernon-Monashee, stated.
