Frustration turns into booming business

App takes the pain out of online campsite reservations

Four years ago, Eric Shelkie and his wife Kim bought a camper van. They were stoked to get out and camp around Vancouver. They were less excited when they tried to reserve a campsite as everything was booked, even if they drove for hours.

Kim Shelkie wasn’t willing to give up. So, she hit the refresh button on the BC Parks website repeatedly. After a while she found a new campsite opening she immediately booked it.

The experience got Eric thinking, that other people must have experienced the same concern and he got to work on building an app called ‘Campnab’ to automatically check park websites for cancellations. He found that many reservations get cancelled, meaning that, in spite of demand, thousands of campsites go unused.

A user friendly interface was added and then it was shared with other campers. Within moments of going live, B.C. campers were finding campsites.

Campnab now has 300,000 campsites listed around North America. The service monitors a number of provincial, state, and federal parks in Canada and the United States.

What started as a frustrating effort to book a campsite, has turned into a full time job.

“We continually improve our scanning algorithm to run more efficiently. We add member-requested features. We also offer one-on-one support,” Eric Shelkie stated on their website.

Once your requested campground has an opening, you get a text to your cell phone.

Pay-per-use scans cost $10 – $20, depending on how frequently you want to check availability.

The company also offers a number of monthly membership options. To date, they have done over 350,000 scans for customers.
