Invasive weed warriors to help out in Greater Vernon

Apr 29, 2021 | 1:00 PM

The North Okanagan is getting some help in battling a growing problem with invasive plants.

“The Invasive Species Council of B.C. is placing action teams throughout the province and one of them is going to be a four person action team based in the Vernon area, commencing in early May, through the electoral area’s noxious weed program,” Regional District of North Okanagan CAO David Sewell said.

The teams will be involved in both educating people on the types of problem plants and also instructing and assisting in removal and disposal.

Nastier looking plants, like Canadian thistle and Common burdock are fairly easy to pick out as a problem.

Some are beautiful but can be extremely harmful like the purple loosestrife that took over parts of the Swan Lake corridor last spring. It can be harder to tell if pretty plants are friend or foe.

There are over 50 invasive water and terrestrial plants now identified in B.C. and more being identified every year.

If you see a plant that looks out of place you can report it to the Invasive Species Council of B.C.

The council notes the sooner action can be taken the easier it will be to contain the spread.
