$1M ‘Go Fund Me’ for the Schubert Centre Society

The Schubert Centre was struggling before the ravages of COVID-19 beset the community and now the long time community organization is facing one million dollars in debt.

The organization had just launched fundraising efforts in January 2020 as they faced rising debt and are in need of a new HVAC system for the building.

Well-known local fundraiser Shirley Higgins had been brought on board as the new manager, following the sudden passing of long time manager Jack Gareb.

Concerned citizen and Schubert Centre supporter, Mike Caira, set up the GoFundMe page for the organization.

“I reached out to the society and asked if I might assist them by starting a Go Fund Me fundraiser in hopes it might assist and perhaps solve the financial troubles they face. My offer and my letter was discussed by the society board and I am very pleased that they have approved and given me permission to go forward with implementing the Go Fund Me plan for the benefit of the society,” Caira, a Coldstream resident, said.

The Schubert Centre opened in 1984 and while it has primarily been thought of as a gathering place for seniors, it is, and has always been more. It is both a social and recreational gathering spot. Many people in the Okanagan have been to weddings, galas, dances, held meetings, had coffee/tea and lunch, played cards, exercise groups and classes and used the on-site catering over the years.

“The million dollar goal for fundraising is SOLELY for the REDUCTION of the DEBT. The Schubert Centre is a not for profit society and is a registered charity. Tax deductible receipts (tax receipts) for donations will be issued via the donation to Go Fund Me. Once the debt load is under control, the Schubert Centre can look forward to a bright and enduring future,” Caira added.

He was the first one to donate to the campaign pledging $100. To donate to the campaign click on the ‘GoFundMe’ link.

“Thank you, Mike, for taking the initiative to help ‘Save the Schubert,’ very appreciated! Especially with today’s announcement, we are closed…again, until April 19th,” the centre posted on its Facebook page.
