MP’s call for public fishery changes

Mar 13, 2021 | 3:00 PM

The North Okanagan-Shuswap Member of Parliament is among a number MP’s from B.C. calling on the federal fisheries minister to allow British Columbians new opportunities in the Pacific public fishery in 2021.

In a letter sent to the minister Bernadette Jordan, the B.C. MPs stated they believe it’s possible and necessary for mark selective Chinook fisheries to be implemented in a manner that supports restoration and conservation of Pacific salmon, especially at-risk populations.

The letter went on to request that the minister “support mark selective fisheries that are properly designed, implemented, and monitored to prevent unintended impacts on unmarked or untargeted fish of wild origin.”

This multipartisan initiative garnered support from 25 of B.C.’s 31 federal opposition MPs from the federal Conservative, New Democratic and Green parties while 11 Trudeau government Liberal MPs from B.C. withheld their support.

“It’s great to have B.C. MPs reach over party lines to show Minister Jordan the broad support that exists for B.C.’s public fishery and proposals for strengthening the fishery,” said MP Arnold. “British Columbians and MPs have worked hard and diligently to develop and promote these proposals and it is high time for the minister to apply the same rigour to her work.”

The Pacific Region’s ocean fishing season opens on April 1 which means Jordan and her officials must decide on the proposals in the coming weeks for them to be implemented for the coming season.

“British Columbians from the grassroots right up to elected federal representatives have pressed the minister on these proposals for years now,” Arnold explained. “This year, more than ever before, British Columbians and the communities they support need these opportunities and I sincerely hope the minister will finally hear all of our voices.”
