509 new cases of COVID-19 in B.C.; two more deaths at Vernon care home

Interior Health has surpassed the 5,000 mark for COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began.

According to new numbers released by Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C. saw 509 new cases Friday (Jan. 15), including 86 within Interior Health. That pushes the IH total to 5,056.

Province-wide, there have been 60,117 cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began, spread out as follows:

  • 13,728 — Vancouver Coastal (up by 101)
  • 37,258 — Fraser Health (up by 260)
  • 1,220 — Island Health (up by 13)
  • 5,056 — Interior Health (up by 86)
  • 2,745 — Northern Health (up by 49)
  • 115 — Reside outside of Canada (unchanged)

There are 4,604 active cases of COVID-19 in the province, down 20 from Thursday. Three-hundred forty-nine people are hospitalized, with 68 in intensive care.

Nine more people have died from the virus, raising the provincial death toll to 1,047.

Two of the deaths are at the Heritage Square long term care facility in Vernon, where there have been seven deaths connected to an outbreak.

As of Friday, there are 7,132 people under active public health monitoring because they have been in contact with identified COVID-19 cases.

A total of 53,115 people are considered fully recovered from the virus, or 88 per cent of all recorded cases.

Meantime, Henry says the number of people who have received their first doses of COVID-19 vaccine has reached 75,914.

Update on outbreaks in Interior Health:

·         Cariboo Memorial Hospital has six staff cases.

·         Brocklehurst Gemstone long-term care in Kamloops has four cases: three residents and one staff.

·         Sunnybank long-term care in Oliver has 28 cases: 21 residents and seven staff, with one death linked to this outbreak.

·         Creekside Landing long-term care in Vernon has 25 cases: 12 residents and 13 staff, with one death linked to this outbreak.

·         Williams Lake Seniors Village has two cases: one resident and one staff.

·         Noric House long-term care in Vernon has 40 cases: 24 residents and 16 staff.

·         Heritage Square long-term care in Vernon has 58 cases: 44 residents and 14 staff, with seven deaths connected to this outbreak.

·         Heritage Retirement Residence in West Kelowna has 46 cases: 41 residents and five staff, with two deaths connected to this outbreak.

·         Teck mining operations remains at 16 IH cases linked to the outbreak.

·         McKinney Place long-term care in Oliver has 78 cases: 55 residents and 23 staff, with 17 deaths connected to this outbreak.

·         Village by the Station long-term care in Penticton has 10 cases: five residents and five staff, with one death connected to this outbreak.

·         Mountainview Village long-term care in Kelowna has 16 cases: eight residents and eight staff, with two deaths connected to this outbreak.
