Barricades on highway create chaos for drivers

Dec 17, 2020 | 4:33 PM

Some barricades ended up in the middle of the Trans Canada Highway in the Shuswap, creating a major hazard for drivers.

On Wednesday (Dec. 16), a RCMP officer who was responding to a call in the Blind Bay area just after 11 p.m. came across concrete barricades in the middle of the highway’s east bound lanes.

In the snow and limited visibility, the RCMP officer narrowly missed the barricades and located a semi truck that was on its side in the east bound lanes.

“This semi driver was not as lucky as the RCMP officer. His vehicle hit the barricades and lost control which lead to it rolling over. The police car then narrowly missed being hit by two other semi trucks who had to take evasive action to miss the barricades in the slippery conditions,” said Staff Sgt. Scott West of Salmon Arm RCMP.

The investigation revealed that a west bound semi trailer hit the barricades with a fishtailing trailer. Two or three of the center barricades became dislodged and came to rest in the east bound lanes.

An east bound tractor trailer unit did not see the dislodged barricades in time and hit them which resulted in that truck losing control and rolling onto it’s side in the eastbound ditch. The west bound tractor trailer was later located some distance from the barricades.

A highways crew that came upon the scene was able to push the barricades out of the lanes of travel.

“No one was injured in the collisions and the highway was closed for approximately 30 minutes. No charges are being laid in this event,” West added.
