Dec 10, 2020 | 3:48 PM

After Wednesday’s more upbeat COVID-19 briefing regarding the arrival of vaccine in B.C., there were grim numbers revealed today at a more sombre news conference, including a new record high death count of 28 people.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced 723 new positive tests since Wednesday, pushing the total to 40,060.

The breakdown by health region is as follows:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health 135
  • Fraser Valley Health 456
  • Vancouver Island Health 10
  • Interior Health 82
  • Northern Health 40

“This is one of the most tragic days we have had yet, 28 more people have died, all but two were elders and seniors living in care homes and assisted living,” Henry said. “Our hearts go out to their loved ones.”

A total of 587 people have died of COVID-19. There are no new health outbreaks, but 57 are still active mostly in care homes.

There are 346 people in hospital including 83 in intensive care. Another 11,947 people are being monitored and 28,940 have recovered from the virus.

In addition to the 82 new cases, Interior Health (IH) has 679 active cases, with 19 people in hospital, with five in intensive care.

The total number of deaths in IH remains at six.

“There will be a time when we can take off our masks, hug our loved ones, and travel to see family and friends,” Henry said. “Tonight marks the beginning of Hanukkah; we need to stay apart, not because we don’t love each other, but because we do. We are not yet through this storm.”

The province detailed n Wednesday what the vaccination roll-out will look like.
