Okanagan Spring wins three world beer awards

Oct 29, 2020 | 3:11 PM

Founded on October 19, 1985, Okanagan Spring Brewery continues to fill the trophy case with awards, recently claiming three including gold for the Spring Porter, and silver for the new Kind Eddy Pilsner and silver for one of the stalwarts of the line-up, Spring Pale Ale.

Okanagan Spring Brewmaster Stefan Tobler celebrates World Beer awards

Buko Von Krosig and Jacob Tobler started the brewery in downtown Vernon, with an eye on offering an alternative to the mainstream beer available in Canada, from Molson and Labatt. They drew inspiration for their homeland using the Bavarian purity law of 1516. One of their first and still best-selling products continues to be their 1516 Spring Lager.

The brewery was sold to Sleeman Breweries and Sleeman was bought by Japan’s Sapporo Brewing, but the Tobler name remains closely affiliated with Okanagan Spring. Three brothers work for the business, including the eldest Stefan who is the long time brewmaster.

Like most businesses, the brewery had to make adjustments for COVID-19, keeping non-essential staff working from home and bringing in new protocols for those still at work.

“We saw a big change on the production side with keg sales to bars and restaurants basically disappearing overnight,” Tobler said. “Demand for packaged product increased and soon filled the void left by the loss of keg sales.”

“There are lots of highlights, I always enjoyed when we were able to expand to fill the growing demand,” Tobler added. “It’s fun coming up with new seasonal beers, and utilizing fruit, which we have so much of here in the Okanagan.”
