Homeless out at curling club, curlers in

Oct 2, 2020 | 6:01 AM

The Vernon Curling Club was swarming with volunteers Thursday with drills, paint brushes and power washers as the club scrambles to get things ship-shape for curling to resume in less than two weeks.

The club’s building has been used as a homeless shelter during the pandemic, but that ended Sept. 30.

“The agreement we had with BC Housing is that they return the club in the condition they were given it, and they did a good job,” said manager Dave Merklinger. “We have provided the paint and cleaning supplies to spruce it up a little more.”

“Following COVID-19 protocol, as set out by Curling Canada, will be easy enough, with eight people on a 150 foot by 15 foot ice surface. Locker rooms, the 260 seat lounge and the viewing area, are a little more difficult” said Merklinger.

Homeless that had been using the curling club as a shelter are moving to the new shelter at 2506-37th Street, run by Turning Points Collaborative Society.

Curling should resume October 13th.
