Pipers doing fine

Kalamalka Highlanders give instead of get

Usually when community organizations come before Vernon council they are looking for grant support for their organization.

That was not the case with the Kalamalka Highlanders Pipe Band.

“We didn’t have our usual parade and event revenues or fundraising this year due to COVID-19, but we took a look at our financial situation and decided that we are going to be okay,” Pipe Major Maureen Soichuk told Vernon council.

Without events this summer the band decided to visit virtually every seniors housing facility in the city. “Scotland the Brave” and other classics could be heard every Thursday night, helping to lift the spirits of many elderly who were unable to leave their homes.

The pipe band formed 36 years ago has had 126 members. Soichuk told council it takes 2-3 years to learn the bagpipes and that fortunately there are three junior members among the 40 band members.

Scott and Soichuk presented council with a collage of all past and present band members.

“Pipe music has always been much loved in our household. We appreciate what you do,” said Mayor Victor Cumming.
