New site for homeless shelter in Vernon

Vernon will have a new homeless shelter site as of later this month.

BC Housing is currently renovating a facility on 37th Street which will have room for 90 guests, and will be run by Turning Points Collaborative Society.

It will replace the temporary shelter at the Vernon Curling Club

“The property owned by BC Housing at 2506 37th Street is being renovated to replace the temporary shelter at the Vernon Curling Club. As BC Housing’s lease on the curling club is expiring at the end of September and the City of Vernon would like to reopen it for recreational use, an alternative shelter site is required,” said Samantha Cacnio, senior communications advisor, media relations and issues management with BC Housing.

The government agency is providing funding to operate the new site until March 31, 2021.

“Staff will be onsite 24/7 to support guests and manage operations. Daily meals, storage space, laundry and cleaning services will be provided onsite. Interior Health will also provide health services onsite based on individual needs,” Cacnio added.

The province is also working with Turning Points Collaborative Society to build over 100 new permanent supportive homes for people experiencing homelessness in Vernon: https://news.gov.bc.ca/releases/2020MAH0082-001332
