Thousands of students will potentially be going back to class next week in the Vernon School District.

A survey of families last week suggested 3,038 students were planning to return to schools June 1, which is 35 per cent of the total enrolment.

The numbers are higher at the elementary levels which will have students attend classes on alternate days, according to the provincial plan.

Beairsto Elementary, for French Immersion students, has the largest number of students potentially returning at 344 which is 54 per cent of the normal enrolment.

Lavington Elementary has the highest percentage of potential returnees at 55 per cent, which works out to 90 of the 163 students.

At the secondary level, Seaton has the most students returning at 253 or 28 per cent.

Secondary students are expected to attend classes one day a week.

Clarence Fulton Secondary was also at 28 per cent, which is 195 students.

Kalamalka was at 25 per cent, VSS 24, and Charles Bloom at 20 per cent.

Parents were asked if they had any concerns about their children returning to schools. At least two said not having the buses running was an issue, which one parent said prevented their kids coming back.

Another parent wanted reassurance people will be notified if someone at the school tested positive for COVID-19. Regarding that concern, the district told her that they would be following the direction from the Public Health Officer.
