Shutting down

Story closing on Bookland

A fixture in downtown Vernon’s business community will soon be closing its doors.

Bookland on 30th Avenue has announced it will shut down in a few weeks.

The final day will be Tuesday March 31.

The store, owned by Vernon’s Monahan Agency, will clear-out as much of its merchandise as possible before that day. The store was busy with customers looking at books and other items Wednesday afternoon.

“We have enjoyed being Vernon’s independent bookstore for over 50 years, but have found it difficult to compete in the digital age,” said a posting on social media from the operators and Bookland staff. “We will miss seeing so many of you on a regular basis and hope you come in to say goodbye before we close!”

The store is located in the former Eaton’s building, which also houses Nature’s Fare.

“This is terrible news,” said one person on social media. “I always stop in to Bookland and buy something whenever I visit. I wish there was something I could do. In many ways, I became a writer through the stories I read from Bookland. My heart goes out to the staff, ownership and the Bookland community.”

“No! So sad, my go-to book place since I renounced Amazon. We’ll miss you so much. Just another reminder to us all to buy locally whenever possible,” said another person.
