Vipers take bite out of Bulldogs and edge Silverbacks

Vernon Vipers moved into sole possession of third place in the BCHL’s Interior Division with a 5-3 road win over the Salmon Arm Silverbacks Sunday.

Drew Bennett scored goals in the first and second period for the Silverbacks and then Vernon came roaring back with four straight goals in the second and third.

Dawson Holt started the comeback with his 17th goal and added one assist.

Max Bulawka, JoJo Tanaka-Campbell and Christian Felton also scored for Vernon who are now two points up on the fouth placed Silverbacks and Wenatchee Wild.

890 fans took in the game at the Shaw Centre.

Next up for the Vipers will be the division leading Penticton Vees at Kal Tire Place Wednesday night.

Matt Kowalski scored a hat trick and added two assists to power the Vernon Vipers over the Alberni Valley Bulldogs 7-3 at Kal Tire Place.

Kowalski, a 20-year old Vernon native, now has 23 goals and 19 assists on the season, tops on the Vipers.

“He’s sneaky quick. People don’t give him enough credit for how fast he is. He gets up the ice really well and obviously has the ability to finish. And usually when things go well for Matt early, we know we’re going to get a good game out of him, and that was no different tonight,” said Vipers head coach Jason McKee after the game.

Landon Fuller and JoJo Tanaka Campbell each added a goal and one assist for the Snakes who held the Bulldogs to 1 for 8 on the power play, while Vernon capitalized on two of their four chances.

A crowd of 1,991 took in the game Saturday night, the Bulldogs only visit to Vernon this season.

The Vipers travel to Salmon Arm to take on the Silverbacks for a 3 p.m. game Sunday, a match you can hear on 107.5 Beach Radio.
