Lumby arena upgrade on track for 2020

A three million dollar upgrade to the Pat Duke Arena in Lumby is scheduled to get under way early in 2020.

The project is in the detailed design phase, and construction firms will be sought in February.

“Challenges that were encountered due to the age of the building, including the requirement of structural reinforcement, have now been resolved and the project is officially in the detailed design phase,” said a news release from the Regional District of North Okanagan.

The work to add four new change rooms will be completed in phases to avoid impact on the ice season.

Upgrades will also include a warming and viewing area, entryway, and modest improvements to existing change rooms.

Grants and the $100,000 Lumby received for winning Kraft Hockeyville in 2016 will fund the upgrade.

“Leveraging the community momentum that was generated through the successful Kraft Hockeyville win, in March 2018 the Village of Lumby and RDNO were awarded an additional $2,595,625 to make improvements to the Pat Duke Arena. Additional funding for the project included a grant from TELUS, and community fundraising totalling $75,000, and $230,000 provided by the RDNO through the White Valley Parks, Recreation and Culture service,” said RDNO.

The Pat Duke Memorial Arena, named after a former mayor of the community, provides ice time for a variety of users, including minor hockey, figure skating, ringette and leisure ice uses, and has been serving the community since 1967.
