Volunteers receive national honour

Sep 5, 2019 | 5:31 AM

Two Vernon residents will be among 44 people receiving the Sovereign’s Medal for volunteers from B.C.’s Lieutenant Governor at a ceremony in Victoria Thursday.

The medal recognizes exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians from across the country in a wide range of fields.

Jan Waldon will receive the medal for her dedication to preserving local heritage and promoting community safety. She shares her love of music through the North Okanagan Community Concert Association and is also secretary of her church’s refugee committee.

Ken Waldon has volunteered for decades, helping maintain community safety through programs like Crime Stoppers and Citizens on Patrol and also helped start the Friends of Fintry Provincial Park Society. He works with local organizations in the North Okanagan region to preserve local heritage.
