‘All we wanted was a fence’: Council rejects hefty proposal for Marshall Fields

City staff were considering a re-design and fence along Marshall Fields, but have met a wall when it comes to the finances.

At Monday’s council meeting city staff provided a $240,000 price tag for a fence and re-design of the soccer fields’ layout, re-routed parts of the footpath, and a vegetated buffer.

“I’m a little surprised. We had two groups in here, two presentations. One of them was the biggest one I’ve ever seen and their solution was to build a fence. And then we had a counter presentation with a number of signatures and their solution was to build a fence,“ Coun. Scott Anderson said.

“But now when it’s come back, we are looking at a quarter of a million dollars,” he said. “All we wanted was a fence.”

Coun. Brian Quiring was also surprised by city staff’s proposal.

“Why are we even talking about this? We don’t have $240,000 that we are going to use for a fence; like this has actually become a little comical. So lets just build a fence and forget about it. We don’t have $240,000 to spend,” he said.

Staff recommended spending the $240,000 after an environmental review was conducted.

The proposal would also include more protection in place for some of the at-risk or threatened species, like the Great Basin Spadefoot Toad.

In the end, council voted to reject the recommendation to spend the $240,000, and instead vote on a fence and its cost at the next council meeting slated for July 8.
