Vernon arsonist sentenced in court

A former Salmon Arm school teacher who plead guilty to setting a string of fires in Vernon in 2014 has been handed down a 3 year sentence.
57 year-old Willam Munton sat emotionless as the judge handed down his sentence on Friday afternoon. With credit for time served he will be spending the next 2 years and 10 months in federal prison.
The Crown told Judge Macintosh that Munton and a 17- year old boy set the fires by filling half of a 1.9 litre Rubbermaid container with gasoline while lighting a Zip fire starter cube.
The fires took place within a six week period in June and July 2014 and another fire was set in October 2014 . The fires caused damage to the historical Kin Race Track grandstands which sustained over $300,000 in damage. Two thousand fruit crates owned by B.C Tree Fruits, a boat owned by one of his friends , a duplex, a motorhome, a house under construction and a Chevrolet van were among the other fires set by Munton . While no one was injured in the blazes , the fires , the crown argued put “the community on edge.”
