Vernon School Trustees Talk Transportati

Vernon School Trustees Talk Transportation and Pay

Dec 21, 2018 | 4:14 PM

The new Vernon School Trustees recently reviewed a couple of issues that needed to be addressed before year’s end.

The busing issue and Trustee Remuneration were both on the agenda.

Board Chair Robert Lee says regarding busing there were many concerns taken into play. “We are looking at the walk lineage, city children urban verses rural, the courtesy rider situation along with special consideration to our Special Ed kids”.

He also mentioned the whole financial pressure of the transportation budget needed to be addressed as well as the fee structure as right now they are just charging for courtesy riders.

Board Chair Lee also mentioned, “We are considering staggered start times as well as acknowledging the carbon tax, and there are some environmental concerns as well. This committee knows they are under the gun, so to speak and will be meeting quite often in January”.

As far as when details will be released Lee said ” We are looking to provide the deliverables close to Spring break, because we know parents are waiting as well, so that’s why we want to make a good timely recommendation.”

With regards to the Trustee Remuneration issue the Board did approve what was on the paper and says, ” That was based on looking at 6 other school districts which are similar in size to ours and simply take an average of that”

He says even factoring that in…their average is actually lower than the Provincial BCSTA average and believes they are being pretty fair in their calculations.

Trustees will now make $16,847 up from $15,400 or an increase of 9.4%.

The Chair and Vice Chair will see allowance increases of $2749 (8.0%) and $1228 (8.7%) respectively.
