The gas leak at 43rd Street and 16th Avenue has been turned off and FortisBC crews continue to work on making the necessary repairs.

People are encouraged to stay away from the area as repairs continue. If you must travel in the immediate area, please follow the direction of traffic control.

The City of Vernon says FortisBC is on the scene of a natural gas leak near 43rd Street and 16th Avenue.

“Vernon Fire Rescue Services are standing by as a precautionary measure and Bylaw Compliance officers are assisting with traffic control,” says a City release.

People are advised to avoid the area if possible to allow responders to work.

Additional information will be communicated as the issue is resolved.

Vernon Regional Transit says due to the gas leak, Route 5 is unable to travel on 43 Street from 24 Avenue to South Vernon or on Okanagan Avenue from South Vernon to 39 Street.

All bus stops on 43 Street will be closed for the evening. Okanagan Avenue from South Vernon Drive to 39 St will also be closed for the rest of the evening.

It is hoped that the repairs can be made before morning.

The bus will be able to travel the regular route down 24 Avenue, but will not be able to pick up the route again until the stop on Okanagan Avenue at 38 Street.

Traffic is being detoured around a site in Vernon where a utility was reportedly hit.

It’s said to be at 16th Avenue and 43rd Street in South Vernon with Okanagan Traffic Control on the scene, and saying a gas main was hit.
