Warmer Weather Could Impact Wildfire watch

The BC Wildfire Service is bracing for the possibility of more activity with the warmer weather this week.

Information officer Ryan Turcot says the fire danger rating in most of the region is low to moderate, but that could change.

“It really depends on where the precipitation lands because that will be a big factor, but in areas where precipitation doesn’t fall, the warm temperatures do have the potential for the climb in the fire danger rating.

Turcot says the public is asked to do its part to prevent fires.

“Now really is the time to be very diligent with any use of fire, or any activities that could result in a wildfire. One of the most important things is to make sure that you are aware of bans or restrictions in your area.”

Turcot says the difference this year compared to the fire-filled July last year is the amount of rain.

“We did see a June that did give a fairly generous amount of rain, so that precipitation really plays a big factor heading into the core summer wildfire season. It just gives us a bit of a better start.”

There has been about 600 wildfires in BC this season, with 116 of those in the Kamloops Fire Centre.
