Vernon council members remembered Bob Spiers at Monday’s meeting.
The ten year veteran of council passed away two weeks ago of an apparent heart attack, at age 71.
Councillor Catherine Lord says she and Spiers used to talk about the numbers.
“Bob was the most self-effacing person I knew. He never ever wanted any kind of attention, but I’m going to miss him. He was a real attention to financial detail person,” says Lord.
A moment of silence was held in Spiers’ memory at Monday’s council meeting, and Spiers’ regular seat was filled with some of his favorite things Spiers’ seat on council Monday was turned into a tribute, featuring a pink shirt (he always wore one on Pink Shirt Day), a can of pop (he liked to down a few of those at meetings), and a copy of the City’s budget.
Mayor Akbal Mund says Spiers will be sorely missed.
“I learned a lot from Bob. He was definitely a numbers guy but he had a great sense of humour, which you would know if you sat with Bob and talked with him which I did countless numbers of times,” Mund told Beach Radio News.
Dalvir Nahal sat beside Spiers for the last 3 and half years at the council table.
“For the city, he was such a huge asset. He just went unnoticed, and he just did what he had to do quietly, but he knew numbers inside out. And I laughed because he was the only one that could make city staff squirm,” says Nahal.
